Coffee Review’s High Rated Gourmet Coffees:

  • Elida Estate – 94 Rating
Coffee in this farm is only grown up to 1 850m (6000ft), in Panamá coffee does no grow higher than this elevation. This coffee is produced under a unique world-condition for several reasons: first the farm is located at a very high elevation (one of the two-highest coffee farms in Panamá), it is grown in rich young volcanic soils, the temperatures are low, there is lots of fog and mist during the dry season, the coffee trees are surrounded by virgin-native cloudy rain forest, the nights get cold here thereby taking a tree from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years to start producing (2 or 3 years longer to produce than average), these low temperatures also extend the ripening time 1 month longer (thereby the development of the bean). All these unique growing conditions show in a distinguished cup.Good sharp acidity and prune undertones and a citrus tangerine like finish.Ranked #1 at the 2001 Micro Farms Category in the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama competition (SCAP).
Ranked #4 in 2003 SCAP competition
Ranked #8 in 2004 SCAP competition
Ranked #7 in 2006 SCAP competition
  • Elida Natural – 95 Rating
The characteristics of this coffee is blackberries undertones, prunes and sometimes blueberries. You will discover sometime new in every cup. Sweet, wine like taste very unusal natural flavors
This coffee has been rated 95 by Coffee Review
This coffee is excellent for Single Origin Espressopure flavors of light rum, hints of dried fruit, tones of orange-citrus, chocolate and honey along with a very clean and sweet finish
This is the most requested coffee in our shop. Enjoy it while it lasts.
  • Elida Honey –  Multiple Award Winner
Pure flavors of light rum, hints of dried fruit, tones of orange-citrus, chocolate and honey along with a very clean and sweet finishRanked #1 at the 2001 Micro Farms Category in the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama competition (SCAP).
Ranked #4 in 2003 SCAP competition
Ranked #8 in 2004 SCAP competition
Ranked #7 in 2006 SCAP competitionASSESSMENT: The whole beans smells absolutely delicious. It’s like a chocolate bar with dried currants. Ground, I got hit with spicy notes (like cinnamon/cloves) and rum cake.
Very smooth flavor; mouthwatering and juicy. Delicate at the start, but as the coffee cooled slightly, it really opened up. It tasted like butterscotch and a hint of dark chocolate with tangerine on the finish. Absolutely stunning. In fact, I was going to make the coffee a second way to compare and contrast, but I was so taken with this cup that I just sat there and savored the entire 12 oz or so that I made. There was such a nice balance and a deceptive simplicity to it – if this cup was music, it reminded me most of Maurice Ravel. The very last drop in the cup smelled exactly like honey. Gorgeous!

*Note: This coffee will be roasted on Thursdays

ABOUT PANAMA ELIDA COFFEES

The Elida from producer, Wilford Lamastus are regular Coffee Review high rated coffees.

More than half of this farm is located in the Volcan Baru National Park, a protected ecological reserve and sanctuary for exotic plants, birds and mammals such as the tropical tiger. The Baru volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America and covers 7 different climate zones. The coffee is grown up to 1,825 meters, the highest elevation to grow coffee in Panama.

There are several local conditions that set this coffee apart from others. The farm is located at a very high elevation, one of the two highest coffee farms in Panama. It is grown in rich, volcanic soil with a cool climate and a significant amount of fog and mist during the dry season. The coffee trees are surrounded by virgin-native cloudy rain forest, and because of the cool temperatures at night, it takes 2 to 3 years longer than the average coffee tree before these trees begin to produce. The low temperatures also contribute to an extended ripening time by 1 month, creating a more developed coffee bean.
